When Coldness And
Indifference Hold You
There are
times when every believer experiences spiritual declension, when coldness and
indifference seem to hold your heart in utter deadness. The worship of God
seems to be an impossible dream. Prayer is a burden. The reading of the
Scriptures seems to give no profit to your soul. You attend the house of
worship, but the hymns strike no cord in your heart; the fellowship of God's
saints seems beyond you;and the preaching of the
gospel does not rouse your soul or enter your heart. EVERY BELIEVER has times
of languishing when he has to say, "I sleep, but my heart waketh."
When such times of languishing come, what are we to do? The flesh becomes easy
prey for satan. The old devil then puts on the mask of
holiness and humility and says, "Do not be a
hypocrite. You know that you are not what you ought to be. You are not
worthy to pray,or sing, or worship with God's saints.
Until you improve just stay home. Stop pretending. Stop
playing church." DO NOT LISTEN TO THE SERPENT! Christ is the Savior
of sinners. Your sinnerhood is the only grounds upon which you have any right
to approach and lay hold of him. The thing to do when your heart and soul seem
to be utterly without life before God is to trust Christ as a sinner. In the
teeth of your sins, trust his blood and righteousness. Soon you will again be
rejoicing as a sinner saved by grace!
