Once Martin
Luther sat for hours in his study meditating over the words of our Lord upon
the cross, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"
Finally, he stood and pounded his desk, crying, "God forsaking God! No man
can understand that!" Luther's conclusion was true. We can never
understand how God can forsake his Son. That is a depth into which we cannot
dive. But we do know why God forsook his Son. Those whom our Lord represented
deserved to be forsaken. When the immaculate Mediator took our sins upon
himself, the law and holiness of God demanded that he be forsaken. But there is
honey in the rock. Since Christ was forsaken for me, I can be assured that I
shall not be forsaken of God!
