The false prophets of modern religion (those prophets
of deceit who make merchandise of men's souls) offer Jesus Christ to men as the
solution for life's problems. We are told, "If you accept Jesus as your
Savior, he will solve your marriage problems, your financial problems, your
health problems, your drinking problems, and your drug problems; and you will
find complete happiness here and hereafter." This is strange preaching in
the light of what our Lord said - "In this world ye shall have
tribulation." "Think not that I am come to send peace, but a sword,
and a man's foes shall be they of his own household." "The time
cometh that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service."
Those preachers of health, wealth and happiness are liars. What they preach and
what they do is determined by their desire for fame and fortune.
The sinner who truly comes to Christ the Lord does not come to have his earthly problems solved, to have his body, his home, or his bank account healed. He comes to be saved from sin. He comes to Christ the Lord for mercy. Mercy is all that God has promised; and mercy is al1 the believing sinner desires.
Wealth and honor I disdain,
Earthly comforts, Lord, are
vain;
These will never satisfy,
Give me Christ or else I die!
