WE NEED SOME MEN LIKE GILL TODAY

In 1730 John Gill published a tract entitled, "The Everlasting Love of God To His Elect And Their Eternal Union With Christ", in which he defended the gospel of the grace of God against the attacks of a very prominent and popular preacher of his day. Just before its publication, some well-meaning friends called on Mr. Gill, hoping to persuade him not to publish the tract. Among other things, they warned him that he would lose the esteem and support of some wealthy people. Without a moment's hesitation, God's faithful servant replied, "Don't tell me of losing. I value nothing in comparison with gospel truths. I am not afraid to be poor, I have chosen to suffer reproach, the loss of good name and reputation, to forego popularity, wealth, and friends; yea, to be traduced as an antinomisn, rather than to drop or conceal one branch of truth respecting Christ and free grace." The church could use some men of such character, such boldness, and such faithfulness today.
