THE BRAZEN SERPENT – A TYPE OF CHRIST

“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up” (John 3:14). The crucifixion of Christ in the place of sinners was absolutely necessary. The lifting up of the Son of man is a “must”. It is not “a” remedy, it is the only possible remedy for sin. Only in this way can the demands of God’s holiness and righteousness, and the purpose of his love and mercy, be fully met.

The brazen serpent which Moses lifted up was a fiery serpent. And so our Lord Jesus Christ was made to endure the fiery wrath of God. His very soul was made to burn with the fire of hell for us! He was made sin! As the serpent was a cursed creature, the Lord Jesus Christ was made a curse for us, for it is written, cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree.” “He hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” “He his own self, bare our sins in his own body on the tree.”
