THE BASIS OF OUR FAITH

All men are religious by nature. All men believe something. And all men act according to what they believe. Our faith governs our lives. For some, the basis of faith is THE HUMAN CONSCIENCE. In order to find out who God is and what God requires of men, man consults himself. That which tallies with man is thought to be Divine. For others, the basis of faith is RELIGIOUS TRADITION. They believe and practice what the majority of religious people have believed and practiced through the centuries. They consult the creeds and confessions of the church and the writings of the church fathers to determine their doctrine. Many build their faith upon HUMAN LOGIC. Their faith is purely subjective intellectualism. If something is logical and reasonable, in their opinion, they receive it. For many, the basis of faith and practice is nothing more than PRAGMATISM. If something works, if it wins human approval, if it is successful, they accept it.

For the children of God, none of these things will do. We must have a surer foundation, we must have something more solid, substantial, something more Divine than things upon which to build our faith. THE BASIS OF OUR FAITH IS THE WORD OF GOD, AND THE WORD OF GOD ALONE. "To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this Word, it is because there is no light in them" (Isa. 8:20). We believer, preach, and practice that which is plainly taught in the Word of God. Our creed is, "Thus saith the Lord." The Bible alone is the Revelation of God. It is God's voice from heaven. The Word of God stands alone, upon its own authority. It waits for no defense. It needs no endorsement. It simply demands submission, faith, and obedience. To receive it is salvation. To reject it, trifle with it, and question it is to make shipwreck of your soul!
