Straw Men Slain

Straw men are built with brilliant ease

With ugly, twisted, painted straw;

And with the mighty pigmy’s sneeze,

The pigmy sees his straw man fall.

“The ugly monster I have slain

By my own humble, brilliant brain,”

The bloated little pigmy screams,

“Now all the praise I crave, I’ll gain.”

And other spiteful, little men

Applaud and praise their pigmy friend;

And thus the band of little men

Proudly strut and swell with wind.

Such little imps, I have to tell,

Like flies swarming elephants’ tails,

Shall get no more than what they smell

From elephants’ swishing tails.
