SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER IN CHOOSING A CAREER

I have many friends who are today isolated from the people of God because of the careers they have chosen. They are living in a place where there is no gospel ministry. Like Lot in Sodom, though they have obtained wealth and success, both their own souls and the souls of their families are suffering. For most of them, it is too late. Either they cannot or will not make the sacrifices necessary to be under the ministry of the gospel and in the fellowship of God's saints. Some, like Lot, vex their righteous souls from day to day. Others, like Esau, prefer the comforts of this world to the things of Christ. Only God knows the state of their hearts. But in either case, theirs is a terribly lamentable condition.

But for you, it is not too late. Many of you are thinking about your career. Others of you may be thinking about making a change. The carnally minded man, the man who lives for and loves this world, in choosing a career considers that which will provide him with the greatest wealth, comfort, and security. But you who trust Christ and endeavor to live for his glory must consider things that are much more important. Here are three things that you would be wise to consider in seeking a career:

1. WHAT IS BEST FOR MY SOUL?

If a career opportunity is set before you which would take you away from the worship of Christ, the ministry of the gospel, and the fellowship of the Lord's people, do not even consider it. It is a snare of Satan. No matter how promising it may be, or how lucrative the offer, if you value your soul, refuse such a career!

2. WHAT WILL EXPOSE NE TO THE LEAST TEMPTATION AND SIN?

There are many legitimate forms of employment which are not suitable for the children of God, simply because they expose you to much temptation and sin. A wise man stays as far away from danger as he can. Only a fool plays upon the dangerous precipice.

3.  WHAT WILL GIVE ME THE BEST OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE THE LORD, ENJOY CHRIST, AND GLORIFY GOD?

Nothing should be of greater importance to you who believe than these things. The Lord has not left us here in this world to collect gold, but to serve him, to enjoy him, and to glorify him. Seek these things first; and all that you need will be given to you. We are not citizens of this world, but strangers and pilgrims passing through it. Let us live as such. Nothing is more important in this life than for us to do the will of the Lord our God. And you cannot do the will of God if you choose a career that removes you from every means and opportunity of grace.
