Most people approach the Bible
as they would a book on science, mathematics, or law. They will receive that
which appears to them to be reasonable. Or else, they will twist the scriptures
into consistency with their own reason.
But the believer approaches the Word of God in humble
faith. His reason and learning bow to the authority of God's Revelation. That
which he cannot understand he receives just as readily as he does the most
simple word. He does not try to prove the validity of biblical truth. He simply
bows to it, seeking the illumination of God the Holy Spirit in his heart, so
that he may understand that which he has revealed by his holy prophets and
apostles.
There are many things plainly revealed in the Word of
God which I fully believe, though I cannot begin to understand them. I do not
understand the doctrine of the Trinity, the mystery of the incarnation, the
substitutionary death of the Son of God, or the believer's union to him. But
these blessed truths are plainly revealed in holy scripture. Therefore, I so
fully believe them that I rest my soul upon them. And my very being lives upon
them. In fact, those portions of scripture which are most beyond the reach of
my puny mind are the most blessedly real to me.
