There are six long days between Sundays, during which
you must face the trials, temptations, burdens, and cares of this world. I know
that, as believers, you need to be encouraged, refreshed, comforted, and
reminded of all the blessings and benefits that are ours in Christ Jesus.
Sinners need to hear the gospel as much on Wednesday as they do on Sunday.
Believers need to be exhorted and edified in the middle of the week as much as
they do when the week begins.
These
thoughts compel me to be as careful, diligent, and concerned in preparation for
Wednesday night, as I am for Sunday morning. Our Mid-Week service is not a
meaningless devotion, with an unprepared sermonette. Nor is it a time for
church business meetings. It is a worship service. It is a time for praise,
prayer, worship, fellowship, and gospel preaching. Many of those who regularly
attend tell me that they look forward to and enjoy the Wednesday night service
more than any other service of the week. Perhaps you would too.
But
many of you neglect this service. I believe that you are robbing yourself of a
real blessing when you do. When a table is set and thoroughly furnished with
food from the Word, hungry people will come to eat. Could it be that you just
aren’t hungry?
