“He hath not dealt with us after our
sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.”—Why is it that God has
not dealt with us after our sins? Is it not because he has dealt with Another
after our sins?—Another who took our sins upon himself?—Another who was made to
stand before him in his indignation and suffer the fierceness of his
anger?—Another upon whom all the fury of his holy justice was exhausted? Why
did the Son of God suffer all the fury of his Father’s wrath? Because our sins
were imputed to him. He was made to be sin for us! Our great, gracious, wise
and just God is too righteous and just to punish the same crimes twice. Having
turned his fierce wrath upon our Substitute, he will never turn it upon the
soul for whom Christ died. Having rewarded him according to our iniquities, he
now rewards us according to his merits!
