I am frequently asked to reconcile these two doctrines of
the gospel, human responsibility and Divine sovereignty, as though the two were
enemies. They are not. Both are blessed truths of Holy Scripture. The Word of
God plainly reveals that God has predestinated all things that come to pass,
and that he has mercy on whom he will have mercy. The
Bible also reveals, with equal clarity, that all men are responsible to repent
and believe the gospel, and that any sinner who does so shall be saved. I
proclaim both truths, without apology, hesitancy, or defence. Anyone who is
saved is saved entirely by God's sovereign, eternal, irresistible purpose and
work of grace. Anyone who is lost, is lost because of
his own willful unbelief. If you will believe on Christ, God will save you. If
you refuse to believe, your eternal ruin is your own doing.
