DOES ABSOLUTE GRACE PROMOTE
LICENTIOUSNESS?
What is the helper's rule of
life? By what standard must our lives be governed, as the children of God in
this world? How should we behave? What principles are we to live by, as we walk
before God and men in this world? These are questions which concern all of
God's children. REALLY, NONE OF GOD'S PEOPLE ARE LAWLESS, REBELLIOUS
ANTINOMIANS. We all want to honor God, we all want
to do the will of God. We all want to do what is right. A person who is chosen,
redeemed, and regenerated by the grace of God has a principle of godliness and
righteousness created in his heart. Such a person wants to live in a manner
that is honoring to God, for the glory of Christ.
But there is great controversy raging at this time
about law and grace. Men tell me that by refusing to preach the law of Moses as a rule of life for God's people, I am
promoting licentiousness. They tell me that to preach pure grace, all grace, absolute grace is to promote ungodliness among God's people.
I am often accused of being an antinomian, I will
leave it for others to judge my conduct, as they will. But you who hear me
preach and read my writings on a regular basis will bear me witness, THE
GOSPEL OF GOD'S GRACE IN CHRIST WHICH I PREACH TO YOU CANNOT BE JUSTLY CHARGED
WITH SUCH HEDIOUS TENDENCIES. The gospel I preach promotes the highest
standards of godliness and moral righteousness. If you and I endeavor to obey
the gospel of God's grace our lives will be well governed. The gospel of the
grace of God is a pure gospel.
YOU WHO LIVE BY THE GOSPEL GIVE EVIDENCE OF ITS
PURITY. Without any legal constraint, without any legal fears, you
willingly serve our God. His love causes you to love him. His grace causes you
to be gracious. The sacrifice of Christ causes you to be sacrificial. Why do
you do what you do? The love of Christ constrains you. We need no law, and will
have no law, but the law of the gospel, as it is exemplified in our Lord
