Consistent Theology Or Biblical Doctrine?

It has never been a matter of great concern to me whether my doctrine is consistent with this or that system of theology. While I recognize that God is perfectly consistent with himself and that the Word of God is perfectly consistent with itself, I am just as fully convinced that no sinful man is capable of logically systematizing the Revelation of God. God’s Word is majestically transcendent and infinitely higher than our noblest thoughts. I am content and happy to bow to the plain statements of Holy Scripture in all things.

If there appears to me to be an inconsistency between the plain statements of Scripture about God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility, between God’s sovereignty and the utility of gospel preaching as his ordained means of grace, between the fact that salvation is by grace alone without works and necessity of believers maintaining good works, or anything else revealed in the Word, I recognize and acknowledge that the only real inconsistency is in my puny brain.

To those who demand precise logic and consistency, I say, Let us be precisely consistent with the plain statements of Holy Scripture. Only then do we honor God.
