It will help you who are
God's children to bear your trials and afflictions patiently, if you can
understand that God is not punishing you for some sin in your life, either
before or after conversion, God punished our sins in his Son, our Substitute,
to the full satisfaction of his justice. He will never punish them in us.
Punishment is the satisfaction of justice, anger, and wrath. Where there is law
and justice, punishment is essential as often as the law is broken. But since
God punished our offenses in his Son, justice will not allow him to punish us.
Chastisement, on the other hand, is the correction of a child by his loving
Father. Chastisement is not for the satisfaction of angers but for the benefit
of the child. The Lord chastens all of his children; but he punishes none of
his children (Heb. 12:5-11).
