"BUT I ALWAYS THOUGHT..."

The most common objection I hear from men and women to the message of God's free and sovereign grace is, "But I always thought...", or, "I was always taught...". OF THIS YOU MAY BE SURE: Your thoughts are never God's thoughts, and your ways are never his ways. (Isa. 55:8). This is the problem with our race - We all imagine that God is like us, and we try to measure God's character and conduct by ours. The Lord God says, "Thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself (Psa. 50:21).

When man measures God by  his yardstick, God appears somewhat weak, inadequate, a little pathetic. But a weak, inadequate, pathetic god is no God at all! If we would know the Lord God we must submit our thoughts, customs, and traditions to the Word of God. Here are some questions I challenge you to consider only in the light of Holy Scripture:

1. Does God always do what he wants? (Isa. 46:9-11).

2. Is man totally depraved? (Rom. 3:9-20).

3. Did God choose some to salvation and not others?        (Rom. 9:11-13).

4. Did Christ die for everyone or only for his elect?      (John 10:11, 26).

5. Is salvation by the will of man or the will of God?     (Rom. 9:16).

6. Do all people have a chance to be saved? (Matt.         11:25-26).

7. Can a saved person ever be lost? (John 10:28; Mal.      3:6).
