BROTHER, LEAD US IN PRAYER
There is no part of public
worship which is more important than public prayer. That man who is asked to
lead the congregation in prayer has an awesome responsibility to perform. He
must bring the congregation, as it were, into the presence of God. He must
speak to God as the representative of the church. Therefore, we should use
discretion in asking a man to pray in public. All men should pray. But not all
men should lead the saints in public prayer. If you are called on to pray publicly,
do not take it lightly.
Remember, you are leading others; therefore, speak plainly and clearly. But also remember that you are praying; therefore, let your prayer be both fervent and spiritual. I do not think that God is very interested in our "Sunday Weather Reports". Let your prayer be taken up with the matter at hand - WORSHIP. Confess your sin and weakness as a congregation. Plead for God's mercy. Pray for the minister. Ask God's blessings upon the Word. Pray for sinners. Pray for saints. Seek the presence and power of God. Above all, seek the glory of Christ in all that is said and done. If you are in a position to call upon someone to pray, seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The man who leads in prayer leads in worship.
