A WORD TO THOSE WHO TEACH

We have received an excellent response to our Sunday morning Bible classes. Both the young children and the adults of our congregation appear to be enthusiastic about these classes. And you who are teaching have shown great diligence and concern in your preparation. All of this encourages me. If our instruction in the Bible classes is to be profitable and effectual, there are certain things we must carefully examine, as we prepare to teach.

1. Have I sought the INSTRUCTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?

I cannot properly teach others if I am not taught of God. Through sincere prayer and diligent study, the Holy Spirit of God opens to us the mysteries of the gospel revealed in the Word of God.

2. What is the Holy Spirit teaching IN THIS PARTICULAR TEXT?

It is not enough that our doctrine be true and sound. It must be true to the text before us. We must avoid the irreverent danger of twisting the scriptures to suit our doctrine, or making a text say what it does not say.

3. Is my teaching SPIRITUAL?

Our aim in these Bible classes is not to merely instruct the minds of those who attend: to teach them certain doctrines and principles. Our intention is to reach their hearts. We are aiming at the conversion of their souls and the edification of their hearts. The TRUTH is more than a correct understanding of the gospel. It is the knowledge of Christ. Christ is THE TRUTH.

4.  Are my lessons SIMPLE AND CLEAR?

It will be of no value for adults or children to hear me teach if they do not understand what I say. Use simple words, clear illustrations, and plain speech in teaching. If you would have people to understand what you say, you must repeat the same truths many times and always use plain, everyday language.

5. Do my lessons CLEARLY STATE THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST?

As I prepare my Bible class lessons, as when I prepare my sermons, I ask myself this question. It must never be neglected. Suppose there is one setting in your class today who has never before attended a gospel church, would he come away from the class with a clear knowledge of the gospel? There are many ways of stating it, but the gospel of Christ must be the core and substance of all biblical instruction. Always include the three "R's"-RUIN BY THE FALL - REDEMPTION BY THE BLOOD - REGENERATION BY THE HOLY SPIRIT.

Your faithfulness and diligence toward this ministry is greatly appreciated. I am praying for God's blessings upon your labors.
