“The Forgiveness of Sins”

Ephesians 1:7

The result of redemption is “the forgiveness of sins.” Wherever there is redemption through the precious blood of Christ there is the forgiveness of sins. You cannot have one without the other.

Forgiveness was purchased for us by the blood of Christ. Forgiveness is given to us upon the merit of his blood atonement. Forgiveness is ours in exactly the same sense that it is Christ’s. He was released from the load and from the charge of sin when he had fully paid the debt of sin, and so are we (1 Peter 4:1; 1 John 4:17).

All Sin

God has forgiven us of all past sins. He has forgiven us of all present sins. He has forgiven us of all future sins. He has removed them from us (Psalm 103:12). He cast them into the depths of the sea. He blotted them out (Isaiah 43:25). He will not impute them to us (Romans 4:8). He has purged them away! He will not remember them against us again forever! He will never deal with us any the less graciously because of our sins.

Robert Hawker rightly observed, “So infinitely extensive in its efficacy is redemption from sin in all its consequences that it reacheth through all time, and through all eternity. And so infinitely great in its power, that ‘it cleanseth from all sin’ (1 John 1:7).”

Mercy’s Great Deed

Mercy’s great deed is the blessed forgiveness of sin. It is the glory of grace to forgive sin. It is the majesty of mercy to forgive sin. It is the character of God to forgive iniquity and transgression and sin (Exodus 34:5-7). This is an act of God alone. He alone can forgive sin. And his forgiveness is the only One whose forgiveness we need, desire, and must have for the salvation of our souls and the peace of our troubled consciences (Psalm 130:3-4).

What a marvelous thing this is! The God against whom we have sinned, whose name we have blasphemed, whose law we have broken, the God whose grace we have despised is a God who forgives sin. He says, “I, even I am he that blotteth out thy transgressions.” And God’s forgiveness of our sins is as constant as it is surprising. Certainly, it was done once, with finality, when Christ died as our Substitute. But it is experienced constantly as God speaks peace to the hearts of those who confess their sins (1 John 1:9). This forgiveness of sin is the complete, effectual, permanent forgiveness of all the sins of all who trust Christ. God charged our sins upon his Son, Jesus Christ, and they shall never be charged upon us (Romans 4:8).
