Christ's New Commandment

John 13:34-35

Of all the commands of our Lord, none is more talked about and less obeyed than that of brotherly love. Yet, none are more important. Brotherly love is the law of Christ's kingdom. It is the believer's rule of life. It is the sure result of a saving union with the Son of God.

Love is a New Commandment. Not that it was never taught before the times of Christ. Love is the sum of the moral law of God, as given by Moses (Mt. 22:37-40). But it is called new, because of its excellence, like wine that is aged is called new wine. This love of Christ, commanded in the gospel is explained in a new way, enforced by new arguments, established upon a new example, and observed in a new manner. This is a new love, arising from a new nature, required by new necessities, and extending to new lengths.

Brotherly love is enforced by Christ's own example. We are to love one another, as Christ loved us. The love of Christ toward us was unselfish, trusting, sympathetic, patient, and practical. He loved not in word, but in deed. Let us see to it that we follow his example (I John 3:16-17). If the love of Christ rules our hearts, we will not easily take offense (I Cor. 13:4-7; Psalm 119:165), or do anything to deliberately cause offense (Rom. 13:9-10). It will make us forgiving, patient, and kind with our brethren.

Love is the Proof of Our Faith. By this all men know that we belong to Christ. By this we know that we know him. What can be nearer to heaven on earth than an assembly of loving brethren? Brethren, let us love one another.
