THE PRAYER OF AGUR

Proverbs 30:7-9

Truly this is the prayer of a man who had learned wisdom. It expresses a sense of personal weakness. It shows a proper estimate of things temporal and things eternal. And it displays true, sincere faith and confidence in the goodness and wisdom of God. This is the prayer of a man who valued his own soul and sought contentment with the providence of God. May it please the Lord to give us the wisdom and faith Agur expresses in this brief prayer. "Two things have I required of thee; deny me not before I die: Remove far from me vanity and lies; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full and deny thee, and say, who is the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain."
