Christ Is Able

Psalm 89:19

Because our Lord Jesus Christ is God, he is able to do all his will and pleasure. He is omnipotent! But even the omnipotent God cannot save sinners without the satisfaction of justice, the sacrifice of a suitable Substitute, and the merits of an effectual, everlasting Mediator. Christ is all these things to his people and has met all these conditions for us. And Godhead combined with perfect Manhood in his glorious Person has the ability in himself to do what neither God nor man alone could ever do. How can I say it? There is a super abundant omnipotence in Jesus Christ the God-man. This is what Christ is able to do:

1. HE IS ABLE TO SAVE US (Heb. 7:25). The everliving, exalted God-man is able to save to the uttermost all who come to God by him. His blood is able to satisfy justice. His righteousness is able to meet the requirements of holiness. His grace is able to bring us to glory.

2. HE IS ABLE TO SUCCOUR US (Heb. 2:18). The word "succour" implies more than help. It implies sympathetic, understanding, heartfelt help, such help as can come only from One who has walked in our steps, suffered what we suffer, is touched with the feeling of our infirmities, and is of omnipotent power to effectually help.

3. HE IS ABLE TO SECURE US (II Tim. 2:12). Our eternal security is in no way dependent upon us. Thank God! If it were, we would all perish. Our security is dependent only upon the ability of Christ, in whom we trust, to keep us by his grace. To deny the infallible security of God's elect is to deny the ability of Christ to save.

4. HE IS ABLE TO SATISFY US (Jude 24-25). David spoke for all believers when he said, "Then shall I be satisfied, when I awake with they likeness." Above all else our hearts crave conformity to Christ. Without that perfect conformity, we could never be satisfied. But Christ is able and will satisfy our souls. He shall present us faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy.
