“Ordered By The Lord”

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and he delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with his hand.”                                                       (Psalm 37:23-24)

There is no such thing as an accident. We travel an appointed way. The path in which we walk was chosen for us by our heavenly Father before we were born. Those things that appear to be tragic misfortunes have that appearance only because we cannot read the secret script of our God’s hidden providence, and so cannot discover the ends at which he aims.

Yet, believing God, we ought to live in the absolute assurance that our steps are ordered by the Lord. For us, misfortune is outside the bounds of possibility. We cannot be torn from this earth one hour ahead of the time God has appointed; and we cannot be kept here one moment after God is done with us. “Mortals are immortal here until their work is done.” We are not orphans of time and space, but children of God, the darlings of his peculiar love and care.
