He Is Able!

2 Chronicles 25:8-9

What a great thought! He who is our God and Savior is a God with whom all things are possible. He is able to do anything he will. Nothing is too hard for the Lord. No problem is too great for him. When Amaziah thought that obedience to the will of God was going to cost him a vast sum of money, the man of God said, “God hath power to help and to cast down...The Lord is able to give thee much more than this.” What a word of encouragement! Whatever it costs to do the will of God, God is able to supply that and much more.

“Our God, whom we serve, is able to deliver us from the burning and fiery furnace” (Dan. 3:17), was the confession of our noble brethren long ago to a persecuting monarch. And it is true. Let no tempted, tried believer doubt it. God has chosen us in the furnace of affliction; but he is able to deliver us out of the furnace; and he will.

After he found out who God is, Nebuchadnezzar confessed, “Those that walk in pride, he is able to abase” (Dan. 4:37). God knows how to bring sinners down. Blessed is the proud sinner who has been marked by the finger of God to be brought down. Before he exalts, he will abase. And if God brings you down into the dust of humble repentance, it is that he may lift you up to glory by his grace.

John the Baptist said to the proud religionists of his day, “God is able of these stones (Gentiles) to raise up children unto Abraham” (Matt. 3:9). God almighty can make the vilest of sinners children of faith, heirs of his covenant, holy, and blessed with Abraham. None on earth are so lost that God cannot save them! This same Lord God is “able to destroy both body and soul in hell” (Matt. 10:28). Let all men fear him. Yet, there is hope for sinners without Christ, lost in sin and unbelief. “They also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again” (Rom. 11:23). Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you are graffed into him by God’s almighty grace! Christ is “able also to save them to the uttermost that come to God by him” (Heb. 7:2;5).

The promises of God to his saints in this world, arising from his gracious, omnipotent ability, are full of comfort. As his servant endures the trial of faith, it is promised, “Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand” (Rom. 14:4:). “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound in every good work” (II Cor. 9:8). Indeed, our puny minds are not capable of tapping the infinite resources of his ability. Our God “is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think” (Eph. 3:20). He “is able to subdue all things unto himself” (Phil. 3:21). “He is able to keep that which (we) have committed unto him” (II Tim. 1:12). “He is able to succour them that are tempted(Heb. 2:18). Yes, the Son of God runs to the aid of his tempted and tried people! And “he is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy” (Jude 24).
